Vote Harder T-Shirt

VOTE HARDER

THE BALLOT BOX HAS HEARD YOU. IT JUST DOESN'T CARE.

Every few years, you're handed a piece of paper and told it's your chance to change everything.

Pick a name.

Check a box.

Drop it in.

Then go home and wait four years.

Vote harder.

That's the joke.

The ballot box has become one of the great symbols of political participation. But participation isn't the same thing as power. Elections can change politicians. They can change administrations. They can change individual policies.

But history has never been a story of people simply voting their way out of every form of oppression.

The American Revolution wasn't won because the colonies held a better election. The French Revolution didn't end monarchy because everyone filled out the right ballot. The collapse of authoritarian regimes throughout history has involved everything from mass civil resistance and strikes to political upheaval, rebellion, war, and the collapse of institutional support.

And that's the uncomfortable question behind this shirt:

What happens when the people in power stop respecting the mechanisms that supposedly give the people power?

The answer isn't always another election.

And history certainly doesn't support the comforting idea that every tyranny eventually disappears because citizens simply “vote harder.”
